Hair Salon Etiquette You May Not Be Following

Posted on: 29 April 2021

If you've had your hair done in the salon even a few times, then you're probably aware of basic etiquette guidelines — like tipping your stylist. However, some hair salon etiquette is a bit more subtle. You want to be the best client you can be for your stylist, so if you are not following any of these lesser-known etiquette guidelines, it may be time to start.

Pre-book your appointments, if possible.

When your appointment is over and your stylist asks if you want to make another one, it's polite to do so. If you instead wait and call your stylist two or three weeks before you're ready for a new appointment, they will have a harder time fitting you in. Pre-booking makes it easier for them to keep all of their clients in rotation. Of course, if you have an odd schedule and are truly not sure when you will be available in the future, you can tell your stylist that and book later. It's just most polite to pre-book when you can.

Stay off your phone while your stylist is working on you.

When you're sitting there with dye in your hair or waiting for your stylist to finish up with another client, then it is absolutely okay to look at your phone. But when the stylist is actually working on your hair, put your phone down. You do not want your stylist to feel like they are interrupting you each time they need to ask you a question. You should also be paying attention to what your stylist is doing so you can ask questions to make suggestions as needed.

If you have a question, say something.

If your stylist starts coloring or cutting your hair and you have a question, say something — immediately. You are not interrupting, and you are not being rude. Your stylist relies on feedback to ensure they are styling your hair the way you want it. If you wait until they are all done to say something, it will be a lot more work for them to adjust your style. So, speaking up early is considered good etiquette.

Hair salon etiquette is not hard to learn, but some of it is not as intuitive as you might think. If you arrive on time and follow the tips above, you'll soon be a favorite with your stylist. For more information about what to do at a hair salon, reach out to a local salon.
