What Can You Do For A Better Braiding Appointment?

Posted on: 18 March 2021

Having your hair braided can be amazing since it leaves you with a gorgeous, manageable new hairstyle. However, braiding appointments are still long and a little uncomfortable. If you want to maximize the good parts of the experience while minimizing the bad, here are a few tips you can follow.

Arrive with your hair washed and dried

Your braider will need your hair to be very clean and also dry before they can work on it. Some salons will wash and dry your hair for you, but this does add some time to your braiding appointment. It is typically easier to just thoroughly wash your hair the night before your braiding appointment so that it is fully dry by the next day. Use a clarifying shampoo, and wash your hair twice to ensure you remove any and all product residue.

Decide beforehand if you want extensions

If you just want the hair on your head braided, your appointment won't take nearly as long. If you want extensions braided in, then it will take your stylist a bit longer to do the work. For this reason, you really need to let your stylist know in advance whether or not you want extensions. If you change your mind, call and tell them. Otherwise, they may not book you for the right length of appointment, which may impact their appointments with other clients. Plus, telling them ahead of time whether you want extensions gives them time to prepare some extension samples and examples for you to choose from.

Take a dose of ibuprofen

Many people find that having their hair braided makes their scalp a bit sore for a day or two afterward. Some people even get headaches as a result of the braiding. It's easier to prevent these problems in the first place by taking a dose of ibuprofen before you even head to the braiding appointment. Keep track of when you take the medication; you can take a second dose 4 - 6 hours later if you feel like you need it. This is usually about when your braiding appointment is ending.

If you love a braided hairstyle, then sitting in your braider's chair for several hours is non-negotiable. However, if you arrive with washed hair, let your stylist know whether you want extensions, and take a dose of ibuprofen before your appointment, you can have a better braiding appointment.
