How To Prepare For A Chemical Peel

Posted on: 25 November 2020

A chemical peel can be a great way to reduce wrinkles, alleviate acne, fade scars, and simply rejuvenate your skin. However, chemical peels can be a little harsh and do tend to leave your face red, dry, and irritated for about a week after treatment. The treatment and the recovery period will both be a bit easier to manage if you take the time to prepare. Here are some smart ways to do that.

Use only gentle cleansers

In the days leading up to your chemical peel, stop using any harsh or medicated cleaners on your face. This includes any acne washes containing salicylic acid, tea tree oil, or similar ingredients. Instead, use a gentle, non-medicated cleanser. A cream-based wash works well, but you can use a foaming wash as long as it's one that promises not to strip the oils from your skin. You want your skin to be a calm and moisturized as possible when you have your chemical peel as this will reduce the irritation you experience after the peel.

Apply plenty of moisturizer

Also, make sure you apply plenty of moisturizer in the days leading up to your peel. Use a thick, rich moisturizer at night, and a lighter one in the morning. Make sure you apply plenty of moisturizer to your neck and chin, too, since chemical peels are often extended to this area.

Purchase a good moisturizer with SPF

After your chemical peel, you will need to protect your skin from the sun. If you do not already have a good facial sunscreen or moisturizer with SPF, now is the time to buy one. Try it on a few times before your chemical peel so you can ensure your skin reacts well to it. After your peel, you will need to apply this product every morning to prevent your skin from getting sunburned.

Buy a moisturizing makeup

If you wear makeup, this is a good time to invest in a bottle of moisturizing foundation or maybe even a tinted moisturizer. You will want to avoid wearing makeup for the first few days after your chemical peel, but when you do return to wearing makeup, you will want a moisturizing formula that helps cover and soothe the itching, peeling skin.

If you take the steps above, you will be well prepared for your chemical peel. Talk to your salon professional if you have any questions about chemical face peels.
